Artist statement

I draw upon lunar imagery and abstraction to signal the passing of time and place the artwork’s imagery in the context of memory. I couple this with hand-sewn layered appliqué and embroidered text to visualize the process of understanding an experience of sexual assault and believing that it happened. The processes of hand-sewn appliqué and embroidery are deeply intimate and intentional, and this delicacy of handling and piercing symbolizes the retaking of ownership of the experience of assault. The piece quietly originates from a photographic reference of an apartment building near the University of Missouri campus that shares an architecture style with many buildings in Columbia, speaking softly but firmly to the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses. Tied together, this piece’s processes and origin not only symbolize retaking ownership of an experience, but reclaiming a story as one’s own.
