Artist statement

A looming eye pierces the viewer in a similar way that memories of a traumatic experience can pierce victims months, weeks, and years into the future. I contrast the enormity of the eye with the smaller windows to create a sense of doom and set the scene on quilted fabric with abstract forms reminiscent of intimate poses — implying the viewer is witnessing a scene that would normally happen behind closed doors.  The text, “You want it; I hate it,” builds a tone of resentment, and the presence of domestic materials like quilted fabric and paper places the narrative in the bedroom, revealing an underlying theme of sexual violence. The shattered quilt pieces suspended from one another and from just a few anchor points speaks to a shattering of memory that can also come with trying to recall a traumatic experience — but at the center lies the voyeur’s eye, demanding to be the cause of the brokenness.
